How to Check a Laptop Screen for Dead or Stuck Pixels

Learn how to inspect a laptop or monitor for dead, stuck and bright pixels using full-screen solid colors.

Clean the display first

Dust can look surprisingly similar to a dead pixel. Turn the screen off, clean it safely and then begin.

Use solid colors

Open the dead pixel test and cycle through black, white, red, green and blue. Look closely for points that do not change with the rest of the image.

Dead vs stuck pixels

A dead pixel is typically dark, while a stuck subpixel may remain red, green, blue or bright. Warranty rules vary by manufacturer and panel class.

Check at normal viewing distance too

A tiny defect may be technically present but not noticeable during everyday use. Consider both the defect and how visible it is to you.
